Mid February in the Muskoka there is no place like this. A trek on snowshoes and pulling a load on a sled over an ice covered lake.

Don't breathe inside your sleeping bag at night. Moisture from your breath will wet your sleeping bag and reduce its insulating ability.

Island

Owner of Land on an Island

On November 09, 2007

Street to Trail has ownership of a one-acre on an island in the midstream of the Black River. Canoes rest on the first owned rock of Street to Trail. The cliff banks are a mixture of layered clay and sand. The river flows round the island and drifts north to the Trent Canal.
Island was donated from Treasure House Ministries. They had decided to wind down their operations and, knowing Street to Trail's mission and methods, offered the property to us.

On June 29 - 30, 2007 Paul Mackle and Francis Hebert. Scouts out island and to camp on it. The island will give a number of camping opportunities and safe security with a small shed with power outlets. This will help in the winter wilderness camping.

On October 1 - 4, 2007 Paul Mackle, Robert Murphy, Paul O'Hara, Lou Wilkinson. The development of a canoe route. Our environmental trip starts just south of Washago off Highway 169. Put into the Black River the rocky river gives lots of liftovers excluding the portage the 4 kilometers to the island. While paddling the quiet waters I was thinking of all the people that this will help over the years to come.

The next day we set our paddles to Lake St. John. With maps in hand we journeyed from Black River to St. John Creek. After portaging the dam we seen trees fallen across the stream. This gives a lofty obstacle coerce that make this trip plentiful.

Natural remedies

The wilderness is where people get better, according to Street to Trail, Founder and executive director Paul Mackle. The local program takes homeless people off the streets and sends them on organized hikes into the woods, and canoeing and cycling trips. The program helps participants overcome depression, drug and alcohol addictions, and gain confidence to help themselves, according to Mackle.

He said he wholeheartedly believes in the healing power of nature and hiking trips that take people away from the relative noise of the city. A longtime resident of the Annex, Mackle was a director with the Toronto Bruce Trail Club for years, and founded Street to Trail as a special way to share his love for the wilderness and to help others.

“I met a woman once who was on her way to get drugs, but she went on a hike instead. Upon her return from the hike, that woman, a heavy drug user, went home. People tell me these hikes help them drop their vices, one by one,” Mackle said.

Macke sifted through numerous photographs of his hikers: a homeless man reflecting on a beauty of Georgian Bay, a group of smiling people on top of the mountain enjoying a beautiful view of the autumn forest, and hefty steaks browning on a campfire grill.

“I was a builder, I used to build houses, and now I build lives. I love a good challenge,” Mackle said. “When people feel good they are going to do good.”

The ultimate dream is to make Street to Trail a national program, Mackle said wilderness trips make homeless people function as a team, master self-reliance and community living skills, and ultimately restore hope.

Hiker helps people get off the street

PAUL Mackle said hello to a man at a street drop-in centre. The man responded angrily: “Oh, why don’t you psychoanalyze me?”

“He was really mad,” recalls Mr. Mackle. “I said: ‘Oh, I don’t do that, I just hike. Want to go on a hike?’ He started laughing. Then he sat down and we got talking. He showed me his pictures. He had been on a hike a while back, and I said: “Come on another hike.”

Mr. Mackle’s approach is low-key, but the impact of his work can be profound. Through a nonprofit organization called Street-to-Trail, he takes street people on hiking, camping and canoeing trips on the Bruce Trail and in the Kawarthas and Muskoka. St. James Cathedral and The Anglican Foundation sponsor the program, as does Mountain Equipment Co-op.

When he began leading the trips six years ago, Mr. Mackle was seeking to spark motivation in the homeless people he was meeting. “I was volunteering at Sanctuary, cooking and other things, but also always going on my trips, canoeing and hiking,” he explains. “I’m a hike leader for the Bruce Trail Club. And all the people there who go on trips tell me how good they feel for days afterwards. And I thought there’s something here. People in the drop-ins were telling me how lousy they feel. So I thought I’d put the two together and see what happens. Take them on the trail, make them feel good, and once they feel good, then they are motivated to do other things. A hiking trip is a goal. Once you’ve done something like that, you’ve challenged yourself. And challenge gives you a chance to change.”

He lets people know about the program through various drop-ins in the city. “I sit there and I just talk to people,” he says. “I have my pictures up on the table so everyone can see them.” He does two hikes a month and can take up to about 12 people on each trip. Last year, he took out 148 people and says the numbers increase each year. He refers people for professional help when appropriate, “depending on what they need, from medical care all the way to a social worker to talk.”

Mr. Mackle has seen a number of his hikers get motivated to get jobs and places to live. “I used to be a builder,” he says. “I built houses, and now I build lives. I’d rather not have ‘social worker’ or anything labeled on me, because a lot of street people reject that. I’m just a hiker.”
